Teak Wood Cleaning and Restoration Steps

Step 1. Apply an even layer of teak cleaner all the way around all of the surfaces using a sponge, going with the grain as you lightly scrub it in.

Step 2. Let the teak cleaner sit for a few minutes, then rinse it off from the wood with water.

NOTE: You don't need to let the cleaner completely dry before applying the brightener, just leave it on for about five minutes before rinsing it off.

Step 3. Apply the teak brightener using the same method for applying the cleaner. Coat all the surfaces by gently scrubbing it in with the grain, then let it sit and rinse it off. After rinsing it off, let it dry for 24 hours before applying the teak oil.

NOTE: Star Brite recommends gloves for the teak brightener application, but you should wear gloves anyway for the entire restoration process. Also, make sure to do this job in a well-ventilated environment with a temperature over 50 degrees.

Step 6. Use a brush, sponge or a clean towel to apply the teak oil, making overlapping swipes, again with the grain. Let it sit or dwell for five minutes, then wipe it down with a clean cloth.

NOTE: Applying the teak oil isn't an exact science, but just make sure to apply it in overlapping strokes and get it into all the crevices.

If you keep up with your woodwork after the restoration is finished, depending on how much it’s weathered, you may be able to skip the cleaning and the brightening processes and go straight to just reapplying only the teak oil next time around.

Teak wood refurbishing before after

You can just buy the teak oil separately rather than the entire kit if you keep the wood well-maintained. Just make it part of your annual boat maintenance and re-oil it to keep it looking like new.
