Outboard pressure tests

Besides specializing in selling outboard parts, we’ve also published many outboard maintenance and repair videos and articles. For this playlist, we’ve compiled a handful of our videos dedicated to outboard pressure tests, including gearcase pressure tests, compression tests and leak down tests.

Mercury Tracker 25 Gearcase Pressure Test

Watch the video above to see how to do a pressure test on the gearcase of a Mercury 25 outboard. See how to drain the lower unit oil first, then how to use a gearcase pressure tester to determine if the seals on the outboard are holding up.

Mercury 40 Lower Unit Oil Change and Pressure Test

Watch the video above to see how to change the lower unit oil in a Mercury 40HP outboard. This simple job requires a gear lube pump with the correct fitting, plus the gearcase lube. See how to drain the gearcase fluid out, then do a pressure test on the lower unit and fill the unit back up with fresh gearcase lube. You’ll know the lower unit is full when you see oil running out of the vent opening at the top.

Mercury 200 Lower Unit Pressure Test

After replacing the input seals, the output seals, and the shift shaft seals on this Mercury 200XL Verado outboard, we check to see if it sealed up properly. Watch the video above to see how to perform a pressure test on a Mercury 200 outboard. We use a gearcase pressure tester to make sure the lower unit is properly sealed before re-installing it onto the powerhead.

Yamaha 60HP Outboard Gearcase Pressure Test

Doing a pressure test on a Yamaha outboard is a great way to check for leaks around the upper and lower seals. Watch the video above to see how to use an outboard gearcase pressure tester to make sure the lower unit is sealed from water intrusion.

Yamaha 225 Outboard Gearcase Pressure Test

Pressure testing the gearcase of a Yamaha outboard is a great way to make sure all of the seals in the lower unit of the motor are holding up. Watch the video above to see how to use a gearcase pressure tester to make sure the seals are doing their job of keeping water out of the engine.

Yamaha F225 Compression Test

Watch the video above to see how to do a compression test on a Yamaha F225 outboard. The compression numbers we get from this test provide clues about what is going on inside this 2004 Yamaha F225TXRC outboard motor.

Yamaha F225 Outboard Leak Down Test

Watch the video above to see how to perform a leak down test on a Yamaha outboard. This test pushes air into the cylinder to help find any leaks that may be present. See how to move the flywheel around to test different cylinders, and a next step you can take to confirm a leak.

Small Outboard Compression Test

Watch the video above to see how to perform a compression test on a Johnson outboard. See how to remove the cowl and the spark plug, and then use a compression test kit to evaluate one aspect of a small outboard’s health.
