How to Replace Yamaha F225 Input Shaft Oil Seals
Replacing the input shaft oil seals and the input shaft bearing in a Yamaha outboard is relatively simple.
Follow the steps below, and watch the Yamaha F225 input shaft seal replacement video above for reference while you work on it.

- Ratchet and extensions
- Socket set
- Flathead screwdriver
- Bearing housing puller tool
- Bearing driver set
Removing Yamaha F225TXRC Input Shaft Oil Seals & Bearing
Step 1. Remove the lower unit from the outboard by taking off the five mounting bolts (two on each side, and one under the trim tab) and pulling the lower unit out.

Step 2. Remove the four bolts and washers from the water pump housing. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the housing off the lower casing, being careful not to scratch the mating surface of the housing. Inspect the two pump housing O-rings and replace them if necessary.
Step 3. Remove the metal cartridge that houses the impeller.
Step 4. Pry the metal drive shaft collar off the top of the impeller using a flathead screwdriver, being careful not to damage the nylon spacer beneath it. Next, remove the nylon spacer and the three washers.
Step 5. Remove the impeller, and use a hammer and flathead screwdriver to tap out the woodruff key from the drive shaft, then remove the woodruff key.
Step 6. Remove the cartridge plate, the water pump gasket and the two dowel pins.
Step 7. Remove the four bolts from the bearing housing.
Step 8. Pry the bearing housing off the lower unit.
If the bearing housing is in good condition, you should be able to pry it up and off the lower unit using a screwdriver. However, if the bearing is corroded and stuck in place, you'll have to use a bearing housing puller tool as follows:
Position the puller's jaws on either side of the bearing housing, then hold the jaws against the housing and pull the puller's handle up so it hammers against the top of the puller shaft.
If the bearing housing still won't break free, use a blow torch to heat the housing, then try the bearing housing puller tool again.
If the bearing housing still refuses to move, use a hammer and chisel to rotate the housing and break it free, then try the bearing housing puller tool once more.
Replacing Yamaha F225TXRC Input Shaft Oil Seals & Bearing
Step 1. Clean the lower casing, the driveshaft and the driveshaft splines with contact/brake cleaner, and remove as much dirt, debris and old grease as possible.
Step 2. Install the new bearing into the new bearing housing using a bearing driver.
PRO TIP: If you don't have a bearing driver set, use a socket that has a slightly smaller diameter than the bearing itself. The bearing must be recessed between 4.25mm and 4.75mm within the bearing housing.

Step 3. Install the two new oil seals into the bearing housing, again using a bearing driver or a similarly-sized socket.
NOTE: Once installed, the seals should be recessed about 0.5mm below the edge of the bearing housing.
Step 4. Install a new O-ring onto the bearing housing, lightly grease the O-ring and the outer surface of the bearing housing, pack the oil seals with grease, and oil the bearing.
Step 5. Install the bearing housing into the lower unit with the notch in the housing facing toward the front of the outboard.
Step 6. Apply a drop of blue threadlocker to the four bearing housing bolts and reinstall them.
Step 7. Install a new oil seal cover.
Step 8. Reassemble the water pump, then reattach the lower unit to the outboard and you’re done.
