Yamaha F255 Outboard Rebuild Part 6: Setting Timing & Installing Electrical System
Having reassembled our Yamaha F225 outboard engine, we are now setting the timing and installing the electrical system.
Watch the video above and follow the steps below to rebuild the electrical system in a Yamaha F225TXRC outboard. Use our Yamaha F225TXRC outboard exploded parts diagrams for additional reference.
Tools and Parts – Yamaha F225 Timing and Electrical Rebuild
- Ratchet and socket set
- Torque wrench
- Flywheel holder
- Timing belt
Installing Yamaha F225TXRC Camshaft Gears & Setting Timing
Step 1. Remove the cylinder head covers.
Step 2. Tap the dowel pins into the camshafts, install the camshaft gears, prevent the camshafts from rotating by holding them with a 23mm wrench, and torque the camshaft gear bolts to 43 foot-pounds.
Step 3. Reinstall the cylinder head covers, torque the bolts to 5.8 foot-pounds, then torque the bolts to 5.8 foot-pounds again to ensure they’re evenly tightened.
Watch the clip below to see the camshaft gear installation segment of our Yamaha F225TXRC timing and electrical system video.
Step 4. Install the throttle linkages.
Step 5. Align the marks on the camshaft gears with the cylinder head covers, and align the mark on the crankshaft with the mark on the crankcase.
Step 6. Install the new timing belt, and reinstall the timing belt tensioner.

Installing Yamaha F225TXRC Flywheel
Step 1. Make sure the dowel pins are in place, and reinstall the pulser coil, followed by the stator by using a drop of blue threadlocker on the mounting bolts.
Step 2. Reinstall the vent pipe on top of the motor beside the stator.
Step 3. Reinstall the woodruff key into the crankshaft, then oil the flywheel, reinstall the flywheel nut and torque it to 174 foot-pounds. Use a flywheel holder to prevent the flywheel from rotating.
Step 4. Check that the timing is correctly set by rotating the crankshaft to turn the engine through one complete revolution.
Step 5. Reinstall the timing plate pointer, and align it with the top dead center (TDC) mark on the flywheel.

Installing Yamaha F225TXRC Electrical System
Step 1. Reinstall the throttle arm, followed by the ground cable that runs between the two cylinder heads.
Step 2. Reinstall the thermostats, followed by the voltage regulator & rectifier assembly.
Step 3. Lay the wiring harness over the engine, and reinstall the wiring harness bracket to the engine block and the harness through to the top of the motor.
Step 4. Reconnect the ground wires, and reinstall the starter motor to the engine block.
Step 5. Reinstall the ignition coil bracket to the motor, then reconnect its wiring and the spark plug cables.
